Visitor Insurance Claim Settlement

By Ray Sondeo

When visitors insurance policies kick in, it is usually accompanied by a great sense of relief on the part of the policy-holder. Paid claims of visitors insurance mean that medical expenses like those incurred by injuries such as broken bones and teeth are handled and that emergency conditions such as heart attacks are addressed with the proper medical care.

One example of a claim which was paid is of a US resident whose parents lived abroad. They came to visit their son, but the father suffered a heart attack during his stay and was hospitalized twice. Even with the visitors health insurance plan that was purchased in anticipation of his parents? trip, he still worried about the enormous costs involved with his father?s condition.

In the end, the hospital bills exceeded US$100K. Fortunately, the hospital was able to bill the visitors medical insurance provider directly and thus free the family from the nightmare of such a financial and bureaucratic burden.

Many robust visitor insurance plans offer a PPO (preferred provider organization) network of hospitals and doctors. These networks are nationwide and you can use any provider in the network. The advantage of PPO networked plan is that they can bill the insurance company directly.

This example illustrates the necessity of visitors health insurance. Of course, the victim had no idea that he was going to have a heart attack while visiting his son. His son's foresight in purchasing the insurance plan saved his father serious financial distress, possibly ruin, and proved more than necessary.

A visitor health insurance company will reject some claims, such as those that are the result of irresponsible or obviously dangerous conduct on the part of the policy holder. An insurance company cannot be expected to cover the medical costs of parachuting, for example.

Most insurance claims, following an investigation by the insurance company, are paid. Most insurance claims, likewise, are made by people who genuinely did suffer an injury or illness which their policy was designed to cover. It can, and does, happen to anyone and everyone.

For business or pleasure travelers, visitor medical insurance is a necessary protection and a great source of peace of mind. No one can predict what will happen when far from home and insurance can cover the unexpected costs of having a good time or of doing business when those costs entail medical care and treatment.
