Enrollment Requirements for Visitors' Medical Insurance Policies

By Ray Sondeo

Like any other type of insurance policy, visitors insurance plans have certain eligibility requirements that affect their price and availability. American visitor health insurance companies usually follow these, as well as other, guidelines.

Typically, an American visitor medical insurance company will cover Americans visiting other countries. Some will provide visitor health insurance policies to people visiting the U.S. from other nations, as well, for the duration of their stay in the United States.

Older individuals will generally garner higher premiums, just as they would with any other health insurance policy. Visitors health insurance providers charge these premiums because older individuals tend to incur higher fees for treatment.

Most of these premiums affect those aged 65 years and up. The vast majority of companies will require that their policies be purchased within 30 days of any individual's arrival in the United States, mainly to avoid insurance being purchased to provide coverage when an emergency is already imminent.

The 30-day requirement may be waived if the visitor can prove they have valid travelers insurance. Visitor insurance companies require this measure to prevent risky and fraudulent claims from travelers.

There are also exclusions of coverage which can allow insurance companies to deny claims made from resulting injuries. If a person plans on rock climbing during their trip abroad, they need to include this activity by means of a special policy rider.

A rider provides additional coverage for particularly dangerous activities. Those who enjoy outdoor sports such as scuba diving, climbing, skiing and the like should notify their insurance company. This allows them to purchase additional coverage that will kick in should there be a sports-related injury during the vacation. All visitor health insurance companies are experienced with such arrangements. It is a riskier arrangement for the insurer and requires a special rider, which provides for the coverage.

Because of the risk of a large amount of high-cost, unexpected claims, health insurance for visitor policies must take into account such variables. For the company, it means being able to provide for their clients in times of need. It requires their clients, however, to be forthright.
