Health Insurance agents are not created equally

By Jeff Cline

If you are trying to find the right health insurance plan, you know how hard it can be. Finding a good agent to assist you can be even harder. But it doesnt have to be. There are many agents trying to win over your business, but we can help you pick the right one.

If you have started your search and have requested any quotes online you have probably starting getting calls from eager agents. Not all agents are created equally. Some agents are working for you, while others are only interested in making a quota.

Many people can just go online and find and purchase a policy without even talking to an agent. If you are comfortable with health insurance this is fine. If you have a complicated situation or questions about coverage and agent can help you find what meets your needs.

Some people are more comfortable meeting the agent face to face and working local. Others find it just as easy to work with a licensed agent right over the phone and online from the comfort of their own sofa. Either way is fine.

Sometimes finding an agent to work with by word of mouth is the best way. Friends and family usually tell you the truth about how an agent works. If nobody can recommend an agent to you, you should visit you state Department of Insurance. They have a list of licensed agents in your state.

If you choose a Captive agent, that agent is contracted with one carrier. Therefore they can only recommend and find you products from that one carrier. An independent health insurance agent can shop around for you. Typical there is no charge either way.

Be careful of the pushy agents that call you at home 20 times a day. Some are very good agents, but some our out for their best interest, not yours. And do not fall for the sales people (not agents) that call you trying to sell you non insurance products such as a discount card.

These discount companies are ripping off consumers every day. They require expensive sign up fees which you can never get back. A discount card is only worth the paper it is written on. If you are uninsured you will likely get the same discount from any doctor or hospital.
