Health Insurance...Considering Your Options

By Ethan Kalvin

To say that the subject of health insurance is a hot topic these days is putting it mildly. Some people are worrying about losing their coverage due to unemployment while others are worrying about rising insurance premiums. Still others are wondering if they have the best coverage at the right price.

No matter which situation you are in, you should know certain things about acquiring insurance for your family. Depending on your particular set of circumstances, you will have different options available to you, so make sure you do your homework before you buy. Here are some options that you may not know about.

Government subsidized or funded health insurance - Obviously this is as it sounds, the government helps the elderly, children, families with health crisiss, pregnant women, and parent of children to get health insurance. There are plans through Medicare and Medicaid, however if you are not eligible for these plans you may be eligible through plans in your individual state that provide help especially for children to get health insurance either for free or on a sliding scale, keeping the costs way down. These are available in all different states across the country and are primarily based on need, salary and family size.

Insurance through organizations or employers - Different groups like AARP offer health care coverage to their members. Another option is to form your own group for a group insurance policy. Some states allow you to form a group with as few as two members. In the past, the head of the household was responsible for having coverage for all family members, but in some instances it is more cost effective for certain family members to get their health coverage from their employer.

The biggest key to not spending too much on insurance is to think about what you need, and then be creative in finding a way to accomplish it. There are affordable insurance options out there; you just need to make sure that you look at all of the options available to you.
