No Cost or Low Cost Medication Access Programs: How do I Apply?

By Tom Harkenshire

Even in ordinary times, many people find the cost of prescription drugs to be too expensive. However, in these days and times, the situation becomes even worse. More concerning is the fact many of these people do not have any type of health insurance.

The problem is that many of these people require medication in order to function or even to live. Fortunately, numerous pharmaceutical companies, organizations and large retailers offer free or low cost medication access programs to people who cannot afford them.

Xubex is an example of such a company. They have a patient assistance program that offers all generic medications at low cost, and even provide certain eligible people with three months of supply of medication for $20 or less.

Applying to these programs:

Almost all pharmaceutical companies that offer medication assistance to people who cannot afford them are bound by their own specific policies. In order to get more specific information regarding these assistance programs, it is advised to go to companys website, and if the information cannot be found there, directly contact the company.

After the details are obtained, the candidate must fill certain forms, and mail them with supporting documents. In addition, the doctor who prescribed the medication must fill a certain part of the application form.

The supporting documents that are to be mailed include the prescription, payment requirements, as well as the financial details of the applying patient. Obviously, only patients who cannot afford to buy the medication on their own would be eligible for these programs.

It is important to emphasize that some companies allow applying on behalf of other people. This is probably so that people who cannot do this on their own (too sick, too old, or do not speak English) would still be able to benefit from these programs.

If approved, patients receive the medication within 24 hours after the application reaches the company.

It is also important to mention that every year the patient must redo the process. This condition probably stems from the fact that patients' financial state may improve over time, and so, they may not always be eligible. Consequently, other people may be in a worse financial state and should participate in the program instead.

These programs, the No Cost or Low Cost Medication Access Programs, that are being offered by many companies even in these tough times offer a glimmer of hope to many people, and are truly a testament to the generosity of the human spirit.
